Many Italian restaurants add a small cover charge (coperto) per person to the bill, separate from service. This is not a tip — it is a standard cost of sitting down at the table.
A tip beyond the coperto is not required. A small amount, roughly 5-10%, is a common way to recognise good service, more often in cash.
Look for coperto or servizio listed on the printed receipt before deciding whether anything extra is appropriate.
